Biografie

Arne Lygre (Bergen, 1968) is een Noors schrijver en dramaturg. Zijn eerste stuk Mamma og meg og menn ging in 1998 in het Rogaland Theater (Stavanger) in première. In 2004 kreeg hij de Brage Prize voor Tid inne, een collestie kortverhalen. Zijn eerste novelle Et siste ansikt,  verscheen in 2006. Hij is van 2014 tot 2016 huisschrijver van het Nationaal Theater in Bergen.

Playwright and novelist Arne Lygre, born in Bergen in 1968, grew up in Western Norway. First attracted by acting, he began to write drama at the age of 25. Mother and Me and Men, created in Stavanger in 1998, made him famous in Norway. Then came Sudden Eternity, Shadow of a boy, Man without purpose, Days Beneath, Then Silence and most recently, I Disappear.

 

Arne Lygre has written seven screenplays and two novels. His theater very quickly crossed Norwegian borders: his work was directed in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, Estonia, Portugal and Italy and translated in many other languages. In France, it was thanks to Claude Régy that Lygre’s work became known to the greater public. He directed Man without purpose in 2007. In 2011 Arne Lygre took the stage three times, in Days Beneath, Mother and Me and Men and I Disappear.

 

“In Arne Lygre’s plays, the work of the playwright is invisible” Claude Régy notes. His sober style, his precise writing - reduced to the essential, prodigiously evocative - let burst an underground violence and a breathless power of angst. His “chamber plays” as he describes them, develop strange fictions, showing both an implacable dramatic construction and an ever-surprising formal research. Even though he builds universes which are always autonomous, deprived of any explicit reference to reality, reality still refracts in them with a power of evidence rare to reach. The formal originality of this theater, the playfulness with which he explores issues sometimes grim and solemn, the depth with which he questions our world, his unique unison of fierceness and restraint, evoke diverse and enthusiastic scenic responses. In their own very peculiar way, his texts are in harmony with the evolution of our society and the way we live in it. His prose texts have not been translated yet : Min døde mann (My Dead Man, published in 2009), Tid inne (In Time), a collection of short stories awarded with the prestigious Brage Prize in 2004, and siste ansikt (A Last Face).
